Importance Of Mahalaya Festival And Date And Time Of This Auspicious Occasion, 2023

Mahalaya, which falls a week before Durga Puja, is an important symbol of Amavasya. In Hindu cultural traditions, especially in the Bengali community, this day is given special significance as it marks the beginning of Devi Paksha, in which Goddess Durga is worshiped over the course of two weeks. In 2023, Mahalaya will be on 14 October.

On this day, preparations for Durga Puja officially begin, with the festival being celebrated with huge processions, large decorations, cultural programmes, and traditional rituals.

During the 16-day Pitru Paksha, Hindus pay homage to their ancestors. Devi Paksha Puja is organized for nine days.

In eastern India, people offer tarpan to the Ganges on the day of Mahalaya. They perform this task with water and other materials to their dead ancestors. Hindu people believe that by offering tarpan on Mahalaya, their ancestors can attain peace in heaven.

In other words, Mahalaya gives us the opportunity to honor both the dead and the living. This is the time to focus on our relationships with our ancestors and seek their blessings. Moreover, it also marks the beginning of Durga Puja, which honors the power of Goddess Durga.
